Why FPL Won’t Just Replace It
The enclosure is yours. FPL owns the meter inside it and the service line running to your lot, and that is where their responsibility stops. Whether the meter sits on a pedestal in the yard or on the wall of the home, the box it sits in belongs to you. The Florida Public Service Commission drew that line in 1987 and it has not moved since.
So when the pan rusts through, the pedestal works loose, or the breakers inside corrode, FPL pulls their meter and waits. They will not reconnect until a licensed electrician has repaired it and Brevard County has signed off. Most people lose a day or two just finding that out, which is the part we can save you.

What Fails on Barefoot Bay Homes
Most Barefoot Bay homes are fed underground, with the meter mounted on a freestanding pedestal out in the yard rather than on the wall of the house. It is a different setup than a typical site-built home, and it fails in its own way. A lot of these pedestals have been standing since the seventies and eighties, a few miles from the Indian River Lagoon.
- Rust through the bottom pan of the pedestal, where water collects and sits
- Corrosion at ground level, where the pedestal legs go into the soil
- Water and insects getting inside once the pan or cover gives way
- Corroded breakers and lugs in the pedestal itself
- Covers and dead fronts rusted, bent, or missing
- Pedestals knocked loose or leaning, often from mowers and trimmers
FPL’s newer meters report heat and connection faults back to the utility, so failing enclosures are getting caught earlier than they used to. That is why more of these notices are landing in Barefoot Bay mailboxes than a few years ago.
How the Job Runs
We look at the whole service first, because a rusted pan often is not the only thing that needs attention. From there it is a short, predictable sequence.
- 1We pull the electrical permit with Brevard County.
- 2We schedule the FPL disconnect so you are without power for as little time as possible.
- 3We replace the pedestal or enclosure, plus the breakers and feeder terminations if they are part of the problem.
- 4The county inspects the work.
- 5FPL reconnects and you are back on.
Most of these are a one-day job on site. What sets the overall timeline is the permit and FPL’s scheduling, not the electrical work.
What Changes the Price
We quote each one after looking at it, because two homes on the same street can need very different work. What moves the number:
- Whether it is just the enclosure, or the breakers and feeder terminations as well
- Whether the existing service is worth keeping or the home is due for a service upgrade
- The condition of the panel behind the meter
- Whether it is a yard pedestal or wall-mounted, and how it is anchored
- Permit and inspection fees
If the panel is also failing, it is usually cheaper to do both at once than to open the service twice. We will tell you if that is the case, and we will tell you if it is not.
