Meter Can & Pedestal
Replacement
If the power company pulled your meter or left a notice on the box, you need a licensed electrician before they will reconnect. We replace meter cans and meter pedestals, pull the permit, and see the job through the inspection so the power comes back on.

Why the Power Company Won’t Fix It
This is the part that catches most homeowners out. The meter belongs to the utility. The box it sits in does not. FPL owns the meter and the service line running to your property, and that is where their responsibility ends.
Everything else is yours: the enclosure, the pedestal or the can, the fittings, and the terminations inside. The Florida Public Service Commission drew that line in 1987 and it has not moved since.
So when the enclosure fails, the utility pulls its meter and stops. They will not reconnect until a licensed electrician has replaced the equipment and the county has inspected it. Calling the power company a second time does not change that, and it usually costs people a day or two.
What We Replace
- Meter cans on the wall of the home
- Freestanding meter pedestals fed underground
- Meter and main combination panels
- Service risers, masts and weatherheads on overhead services
- Corroded breakers, lugs and terminations inside the enclosure
- Full service entrance replacement when the whole assembly is done
Power already off? Say so when you call. We move those to the front.

What Actually Fails
Meter equipment sits outside for decades, in Florida heat, rain and salt air, and it fails in a few predictable ways. Rust through the bottom of the enclosure, where water collects and never fully dries. Corrosion at ground level on a pedestal, where the legs go into the soil. Covers that have rusted, bent or gone missing, which lets rain and insects into the box.
Inside, the failures are usually heat related. Loose or corroded terminations warm up under load, and that heat works on the lugs and the breaker until the connection is unreliable. Newer utility meters report that heat back automatically, which is why more homeowners are getting notices now than a few years ago.
None of it is dramatic until the day the meter comes out. That is the frustrating part, and it is why a notice is worth acting on while you still have power.
How the Job Runs
- 1We look at the whole service, not just the box, so nothing gets missed once the power is off.
- 2We pull the electrical permit with your county or city building department.
- 3We schedule the utility disconnect so the outage lands in one window.
- 4We replace the enclosure and any failed terminations, breakers or fittings.
- 5The inspector signs off.
- 6The utility sets the meter and reconnects.
The work is normally one day on site. What stretches a job out is the permit and the utility’s scheduling, so we get both moving as early as we can.
FAQs
What Changes the Price
We quote after looking at it, because two homes on the same street can need very different work. What moves the number is the extent of the damage, whether the enclosure is a wall-mounted can or a yard pedestal, the condition of the panel behind it, whether the service is being upgraded at the same time, and the permit and inspection fees for your jurisdiction.
If the panel is failing too, doing both while the service is open usually costs less than opening it twice. If the panel is fine, we will tell you that instead. The same goes for a full service upgrade, which only makes sense when the home actually needs the capacity.
Where We Do This Work
We replace meter equipment across both of our service areas: West Palm Beach, Lantana, Boynton Beach, Delray Beach, Boca Raton, Wellington and Jupiter in Palm Beach County, and Palm Bay, Melbourne, Viera, Rockledge, Cocoa and south Brevard on the Space Coast.
Underground-fed pedestals are especially common in the manufactured home communities down in south Brevard, which is why we put together a page specifically for meter replacement in Barefoot Bay.
