A Level 2 EV charger is the single most useful upgrade most EV owners can make to their home. It charges your vehicle overnight instead of over several days on a standard outlet. But it is not a plug-in appliance. It is a dedicated 240V circuit, and in Florida, that circuit requires a permit and a licensed electrician.

Level 1 vs Level 2: The Difference Matters

Level 1 is a standard 120V outlet. An EV charger plugged into a regular outlet adds about 3 to 5 miles of range per hour. For most people with a daily commute, that means plugging in overnight and waking up 30 to 40 miles short of a full charge. It works, but barely.

Level 2 runs on 240V, the same voltage as your dryer or water heater. A properly installed Level 2 charger adds 25 to 35 miles of range per hour. Most EV owners wake up with a full charge every morning.

Level 2 chargers require a dedicated 40 to 50-amp 240V circuit run from your electrical panel to the charger location, typically in the garage or on an exterior wall.

What the Installation Involves

Panel evaluation. The first thing we check is whether your panel has capacity for a new 240V circuit. A 200-amp panel with available breaker space typically has room for a 50-amp EV circuit. A 100-amp panel, or a full 200-amp panel, may need a sub-panel or a panel upgrade before the charger can be added safely.

Circuit run. We run a dedicated 6-gauge or 4-gauge wire from the panel to the charger location. In a garage, this is usually a straightforward run through the attic or along the wall in conduit. On a detached garage or exterior charging location, it may require underground conduit.

Charger mounting. The charger unit mounts to the wall at the charging location. We handle the mounting, the wire connection, and the weatherproofing if the location is exterior.

Permit and inspection. In Florida, a 240V circuit addition requires a permit. We handle the permit application and schedule the inspection.
