Generac Generator Maintenance in Florida: What's Included

A standby generator that has not been serviced is a generator that may not start when you need it. In Florida, that moment comes during hurricane season, when you have the least ability to get a technician out quickly. Annual maintenance is how you avoid that situation.

Here is what a Generac service visit covers, why Florida's heat and humidity matter, and when to schedule.

What a Generac Annual Maintenance Visit Includes

Generac recommends annual service for home standby generators, or service after every 200 hours of run time — whichever comes first. A full service visit typically includes:

Oil and filter change. Generac generators use engine oil that breaks down over time, even without run hours. In Florida's heat, oil degrades faster than in cooler climates. We drain the old oil, replace the oil filter, and refill to spec.

Air filter inspection and replacement. The air filter catches dust, pollen, and debris. In coastal Brevard County, salt air accelerates contamination. We inspect and replace as needed.

Spark plug inspection and replacement. Worn spark plugs cause hard starts and misfires. We inspect the plugs and replace them on schedule.

Battery test and terminal inspection. The battery is the single most common reason a generator fails to start. We test the battery under load and inspect the terminals for corrosion. Battery corrosion is accelerated in Florida's humidity, particularly within a few miles of the coast.

Coolant check. Liquid-cooled Generac units require coolant level checks and periodic coolant replacement. We check the level and condition.

Exercise test. We run the generator under load and verify that it starts, transfers, and runs correctly. This also tests the automatic transfer switch.

Control board and fault code review. We check the generator's onboard diagnostics for any stored fault codes and address them.

Exterior inspection. We inspect the enclosure, the exhaust, the gas supply connection, and the concrete pad condition.

Why Florida Is Harder on Generators Than Most States

Heat. Florida's ambient temperatures in summer routinely exceed 90 degrees. Generators sit in direct sun on concrete pads. Engine oil degrades faster, rubber components age faster, and batteries cycle harder in the heat.

Humidity. High humidity year-round accelerates corrosion on battery terminals, electrical connections, and the generator enclosure. Generators in coastal areas — Rockledge, Melbourne Beach, Palm Beach Island, Lantana — see accelerated corrosion from salt air.

Run hours during storm season. A generator that runs for 48 to 72 hours continuously during a hurricane event accumulates significant run hours in a short period. A post-storm service visit is worth scheduling if your unit ran that long.

When to Schedule in Florida

February or March is the right window. Hurricane season starts June 1. Scheduling in February or March gives enough lead time to address anything found during the service visit — a battery that needs replacement, a fuel supply issue, a control board fault — before the busy pre-season period.

By May, our service schedule fills up with homeowners who called too late. By June, it is difficult to get a service appointment before a storm is already in the forecast.
