Rusted box, leaning pipe or frayed wires up top? Here is how to tell which part of your Florida electric service actually failed, and what the repair involves.
You can usually narrow this down from the driveway without touching anything. If the gray box holding the meter is rusted through, bulging, or scorched around the edges, the meter can is the problem. If the pipe running up the wall is leaning, loose at its straps, or pulling away from the siding, the riser (also called the mast) took the hit. If the damage is at the very top, where the wires come in under a curved hood, that is the weatherhead. All three are customer-owned in Florida, all three need a licensed electrician, and all three need a permit and an inspection before the utility will reconnect.
Here is the part homeowners are surprised by: these three pieces are bolted together as one assembly, so what failed and what gets replaced are often two different lists. Our crew sees all three fail, and in Florida, moisture is almost always the reason.
The weatherhead, where water gets in first
The weatherhead is the hooded fitting at the top of the pipe. Its only job is to let the utility drop enter while keeping rain out, using a gooseneck bend and a rubber or plastic bushing that separates the conductors.
Signs it has failed:
- Cracked, brittle, or missing bushing at the opening
- Conductor insulation that looks chalky, split, or sun-cooked near the top
- Green or white crust on the fitting, which is corrosion from salt air
- The hood sitting crooked, or the drip loop hanging wrong so water runs down into the pipe instead of off it
A weatherhead failure is sneaky because the visible damage is high up and small, while the actual damage is happening below it. Water tracks down the inside of the riser, pools in the meter can, and starts rusting the whole assembly from the inside. We have opened plenty of meter cans in south Brevard and along the Indian River where the outside looked passable and the inside was a rust cake.
The riser, where storms and settling show up
The riser is the conduit between the meter and the weatherhead. It carries the service conductors and physically supports the drop coming from the pole, which is why wind matters so much here.
It has failed when you see the pipe pulled away from the wall, straps missing or spun loose, a visible bend or kink, or a gap opening where the pipe enters the top of the meter can. On manufactured and modular homes, which make up a lot of the housing in the Barefoot Bay area and around Micco, the riser is often attached to a lighter wall than on a block house, so a limb strike or a hard gust can loosen it more easily.
One thing worth knowing: a leaning riser can look like cosmetic damage and still be a code problem. If the attachment point has moved, the height and clearance of the service drop may no longer meet requirements, and the inspector will call it.
The meter can, where most of the real damage ends up
The meter can is the box the utility meter plugs into. When it goes, it usually goes for one of three reasons: rust from water that came in above it, heat damage at the lugs from a loose connection, or physical damage from a storm or a vehicle.
What we look for when we are called out:
- Rust bleeding from the bottom seam, or a bottom that flexes when pressed
- Brown or black scorching around the meter jaws
- A door or hub that no longer seals
- Aluminum conductors with white powdery oxidation at the terminations
Heat damage is the one to take seriously. A loose lug can run hot for months before anything trips, and it usually shows up as lights dimming on one half of the house while the other half is fine.
What the repair actually involves, and what moves the price
The scope depends on how far the corrosion traveled. A weatherhead and riser replacement while keeping a sound meter can is a much smaller job than a full service entrance replacement, and a full replacement is what we quote when the can is rusted or heat damaged, because you cannot safely reuse compromised parts.
What drives the cost up or down:
- Whether the meter can, panel, or both need to be replaced along with the riser
- Wall type and how the riser is mounted, since block, frame and manufactured homes all get attached differently
- Whether the existing service conductors are sized for the panel behind them, or need upsizing
- Permit and inspection fees, which vary by jurisdiction, plus the utility disconnect and reconnect scheduling
- Site access, meter location, and whether landscaping or a screen enclosure is in the way
Industry ranges published online for service entrance repairs vary widely and mostly are not useful, because the number depends almost entirely on what is behind the wall. We would rather look at it and give you a real figure.
Before you sign anything, ask the contractor three questions: is the permit pulled in your name or theirs, does the quote include the utility coordination for disconnect and reconnect, and does it cover restoring the wall and seal after the work. A quote that skips those is not a complete quote.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I just replace the weatherhead and leave the rest alone?
Sometimes, yes. If the meter can and riser are sound and the conductors are in good shape, replacing the weatherhead and the damaged section of conductor is a legitimate repair. If water has already been tracking down into the can, that partial fix will not last.
Does a weatherhead or riser repair need a permit in Brevard County?
Yes. Work on the service entrance requires a permit and an inspection, and the utility will not reconnect the meter until the inspection passes. We pull the permit and handle the utility coordination as part of the job.
Who is responsible for the wires coming from the pole?
