That blue-green flash before the lights go out is a power flash. What causes it, and what it means for your home's electrical system.
If you have lived through a Florida hurricane, you have probably seen it. A blue or green flash lights up the sky, sometimes followed by a boom. A few seconds later, the lights in your neighborhood go out. That is a power flash, and it happens multiple times across the power grid during every major storm that hits Palm Beach County and the Space Coast.
Here is what it is, what causes it, and what it means for your home.
What Causes a Power Flash?
A power flash is what happens when a high-voltage component on the power grid fails suddenly and releases energy as light. The most common cause is a transformer failure. Utility transformers are the cylindrical cans you see mounted on power poles throughout Florida neighborhoods. They step down the high voltage on the distribution line to the 120/240 volts that goes into your home.
When a transformer floods, gets struck by a falling tree or debris, or is hit by a lightning surge that overwhelms its protection, it can fail with a short-circuit arc. That arc superheats the surrounding air and transformer oil instantly. The result is a flash of bright light, sometimes blue, sometimes green, sometimes white, depending on the materials involved.
Transformers are not the only cause. Downed power lines contacting each other, equipment failure at substations, and lightning strikes directly to distribution lines can all produce power flashes.
Is a Power Flash Dangerous?
The flash itself is not a direct threat unless you are standing near the transformer when it fails. The real danger is what follows.
When a transformer fails, it typically takes out power to a section of the grid. If your home was running on grid power and loses it suddenly during a storm, any devices without surge protection are exposed to the voltage spike that precedes the outage. Sensitive electronics, including refrigerators with digital controls, HVAC equipment, and anything plugged into a standard outlet, are vulnerable to that transient surge.
When power is restored after a storm outage, it is not always clean. Voltage irregularities during restoration are common, and they can damage equipment that survived the outage itself. This is why whole-home surge protection matters, not just power strips.
What Does a Power Flash Mean for Your Home in Florida?
If you see a power flash and your power goes out, the first thing to do is turn off or unplug sensitive appliances. The bigger concern comes when power is restored. At that point, your equipment is exposed to the restoration surge.
If your home has a whole-home surge protector installed at the panel, it absorbs that transient voltage before it reaches your devices. If it does not, each piece of equipment takes the hit directly.
