How to size a whole-home generator for a Florida house: whole-home vs. managed loads, why your AC decides most of it, and what a real load calc includes.

There is no single generator size for a Florida house, but here is the honest range: most of the standby generators we install are air-cooled Generac units somewhere between roughly 10 and 26 kilowatts. Where you land inside that range depends on two things, how much of the house you want to back up and what your air conditioning needs to start. Start with what you want to keep running

Sizing begins with a list, not a spec sheet. Decide which of these you actually need during an outage:

  • The essentials: refrigerator, lights, internet, garage door, and one cool room
  • The essentials plus the big loads: central AC, water heater, washer and dryer
  • Everything, so the house runs like the power never went out

A managed-load setup protects the essentials and automatically sheds big appliances when the generator gets close to its limit. Whole-home coverage usually means a larger unit and more transfer equipment, so it costs more up front. Neither answer is wrong. A retired couple in a Delray Beach bungalow has a different list than a family on a Jupiter Farms lot with a well pump, and their generators should be different sizes too.

Your air conditioner decides most of it

Florida outages come with heat. When a line goes down in August in Palm Bay or Boynton Beach, the question is never whether the fridge stays cold. It is whether the AC comes back on. Air conditioning is the largest electrical load in almost every Florida home, and the moment the compressor starts, it briefly pulls far more power than it does while running. What a real load calculation looks like

If a contractor quotes you a generator size over the phone without seeing the house, be careful. A proper sizing visit is not complicated, but it is physical:

  • We open the panel and note its condition, its capacity, and how your circuits are laid out
  • Nameplates come next: AC condensers, water heater, range, dryer, pool equipment, and the well pump if you have one
  • The fuel supply gets the same attention, because gas limits a generator as much as wiring does. On natural gas, the meter and line size have to support the unit at full output. Where street gas is not available, which is common in parts of Brevard, we size a propane tank instead.
  • Placement rounds it out: setbacks from windows and property lines, a stable pad, and anchoring that meets Florida wind requirements

Permitting is part of the job, whether that is Palm Beach County, the Town of Jupiter, or Brevard County, and the inspection that follows checks the same things the calculation planned for.

Bigger is not automatically better
